Munster softball head coach Jill Perez enters the 2026 season with a clear focus as the Mustangs look to build on a dominant year that ended just short of a sectional title.
Perez guided Munster to a 25-6 record last season, including an undefeated run through conference play, but the team fell in one of the toughest sectionals in the state. That close loss has remained a driving force throughout the offseason.
“We are just as good as some of these other teams,” Perez said. “It’s about believing that and blocking out the noise.”
Munster will again face one of the area’s strongest schedules, opening the season against several top programs to prepare for postseason competition. Perez said those early matchups are intentional and necessary.
“We have the strongest strength of schedule of any team in the area,” Perez said. “We play tough people, and that prepares us for the postseason.”
While the Mustangs have the talent to compete, Perez emphasized that the biggest step forward will come mentally, especially in high-pressure games.
“It’s intimidating when you go play those schools and people think you’re going to lose,” Perez said. “How can we believe in ourselves and not listen to all the other noise?”
With a confident returning core and a renewed mental approach, Munster aims to take the next step this season.
