Ryan Wellwerts delivered a standout performance at the plate as Lowell erupted offensively in a 15-4 win over Merrillville in a nonconference baseball matchup.
The game took place April 10 at Merrillville High School, where the Red Devils jumped out early and never looked back behind a relentless offensive attack.
Lowell wasted no time, scoring four runs in the first inning and continuing to apply pressure throughout the game. The Red Devils added runs in five different innings, including a seven-run sixth that broke the game open. Wellwerts led the offense with a 3-for-4 outing, scoring three runs and adding a pair of doubles. H. Van Deursen contributed three RBIs, while Gavin Gutierrez added two RBIs and scored twice. Zak Scharnke and Dom Muhm each drove in a run, and Cayden McKinney chipped in with two RBIs as Lowell totaled 12 hits.
On the mound, Scharnke set the tone with three innings of work, allowing no earned runs while striking out three. Trey Zacek and McKinney followed in relief, combining to limit Merrillville’s offense and secure the win.
Lowell also created opportunities on the bases, finishing with eight stolen bases and consistently putting pressure on the defense.
The Red Devils’ balanced offense and steady pitching helped seal the decisive victory.
